Psalm 25

Key Verses:

Make me to know your ways, O Lord;
    teach me your paths.
Lead me in your truth and teach me,
    for you are the God of my salvation;
    for you I wait all the day long.

There are so many voices, messages and so much counsel coming at us these days – from books, blogs, sermons, etc… These voices are seeking to give us comfort, peace, grace, acceptance and love. These messages often sound like:

“You are a mess and broken, but it’s okay! So am I!”

“It’s your story to live and just work it out!”

“Just be true to yourself!”

“Love others and love yourself, and it will all be okay.”

But, what if the message we are missing is the gospel?! The good news about Jesus is the answer for our broken messiness. Since we are broken, we need a Savior to save us from ourselves and our sinfulness. Psalm 25 reminds us that we have one. One whose mercy and steadfast love have been from old (v. 6); the One who pardons all our guilt, brings us out of our distress, forgives our sins; and the One who will not let us be put to shame (vv. 11, 17, 18, 20).

Psalm 25 reminds us of Yahweh’s steadfast love and faithfulness (vv. 6, 7, 10). As we seek him, He will lead us in His truth and teach us (v. 5). He will instruct, protect, guard, and deliver us (vv. 8, 12, 20). He even offers His friendship to those who put their trust in Him and take refuge in Him (v. 14). Let us humble ourselves and repent, looking to HIM for our Salvation.

We live in a broken, messy world, but we have the hope of a Redeemer who came as a baby so long ago and will return again. Let us rejoice in this truth. Let us wait with hopeful and expectant hearts for our Deliver’s return.

Heavenly Father, we thank you for the gift of your Son. Thank you for sending Him as our Redeemer and Friend. In the midst of our distress, fears, insecurities and doubts, may we be reminded of your truths and promises. Help us to take our eyes off ourselves, repent and take refuge in you.

1 To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul.
O my God, in you I trust;
    let me not be put to shame;
    let not my enemies exult over me.
Indeed, none who wait for you shall be put to shame;
    they shall be ashamed who are wantonly treacherous.

Make me to know your ways, O Lord;
    teach me your paths.
Lead me in your truth and teach me,
    for you are the God of my salvation;
    for you I wait all the day long.

Remember your mercy, O Lord, and your steadfast love,
    for they have been from of old.
Remember not the sins of my youth or my transgressions;
    according to your steadfast love remember me,
    for the sake of your goodness, O Lord!

Good and upright is the Lord;
    therefore he instructs sinners in the way.
He leads the humble in what is right,
    and teaches the humble his way.
10 All the paths of the Lord are steadfast love and faithfulness,
    for those who keep his covenant and his testimonies.

11 For your name’s sake, O Lord,
    pardon my guilt, for it is great.
12 Who is the man who fears the Lord?
    Him will he instruct in the way that he should choose.
13 His soul shall abide in well-being,
    and his offspring shall inherit the land.
14 The friendship of the Lord is for those who fear him,
    and he makes known to them his covenant.
15 My eyes are ever toward the Lord,
    for he will pluck my feet out of the net.

16 Turn to me and be gracious to me,
    for I am lonely and afflicted.
17 The troubles of my heart are enlarged;
    bring me out of my distresses.
18 Consider my affliction and my trouble,
    and forgive all my sins.

19 Consider how many are my foes,
    and with what violent hatred they hate me.
20 Oh, guard my soul, and deliver me!
    Let me not be put to shame, for I take refuge in you.
21 May integrity and uprightness preserve me,
    for I wait for you.

22 Redeem Israel, O God,
    out of all his troubles.
