Romans 1:1-6; 16:25-27

Key Verse:

through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations

The promise-making God declares to us his faithful promise-keeping through the proclamation of his gospel to a sinful and broken people. This gospel, however, is not just any typical news, but rather God’s good news about his salvation that he has wrought by his strong hand in Christ. This gospel was foretold from the mouths of the prophets in the Holy Scriptures concerning the Son of God, who would also be the Son of David as well as David’s Lord. This Son of David was to come and rule and reign over the house of Israel with a dominion that is everlasting and in a kingdom that would have no end.

As Paul writes to the church at Rome, he reminds them of the very source and foundation of his salvation as well as his apostleship, Christ Jesus. He also points toward the goal of their salvation: the obedience of the nations. As it is for Paul, so it is for us all who are called unto Christ. We all must drink by faith alone from the fountain of grace and truth that pours from Immanuel’s bleeding side. We must all walk in new obedience in Him. This high calling to receive such a great salvation and to enter into a kingdom under the Lordship of Jesus isn’t limited to, nor bound by geographical location, but rather is for all peoples everywhere from every tribe, tongue, and nation.

As Advent draws near to us, let us give thanks and respond with faithful obedience to our King who has saved us from our sins by giving his life as a ransom for ours.

Joel Long

Glorious God, thank you for the wonderful salvation that you have freely given to us in your Son Jesus. Thank you, for cleansing us from all our iniquities and setting us free from the bonds of death. Thank you for making us alive by your Holy Spirit! O Lord, may you continue to strengthen us and renew our minds in Christ Jesus, so that we may delight in your Word and walk in your ways to the praise of your glorious name. We ask all these things in the name of your Son Jesus, our Savior. Amen.

1:1 Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy Scriptures, concerning his Son, who was descended from David according to the flesh and was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord, through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations, including you who are called to belong to Jesus Christ,

16:25 Now to him who is able to strengthen you according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery that was kept secret for long ages 26 but has now been disclosed and through the prophetic writings has been made known to all nations, according to the command of the eternal God, to bring about the obedience of faith— 27 to the only wise God be glory forevermore through Jesus Christ! Amen.
